For me, The Thai Room gets the closest of any I've been to so far. http://www.sloughobserver.co.uk/whatson/roundup/articles/2009/03/18/10405-food-to-thai-for/ http://www.sloughobserver.co.uk/whatson/roundup/articles/2009/03/18/10405-food-to-thai-for/ Wed, 18 Mar 2009 09:00:00 +0000 What's On Legend of sword-point wedding remembered at restaurant DINERS at the historic Mansion House in Prospect Park can feast on one of Reading's most romantic legends. The Grade II-listed Regency building on a hill overlooking the park is now part of the Harvester chain but its 250-year-old heart-shaped pond points back to the 18th Century romance of Benjamin Child and Frances Kendrick, who prepared to fight a duel to win his love. Couples still flock to the site but its welcoming atmosphere - despite rumours of a ghost - meant that even on a Wednesday evening, it was bustling with families and groups as well. The menu was probably somewhat different to when the house was in its heyday and offered a hearty range of pub classics including steaks, burgers and spit-roast chicken as well as pasta, curries and some south American and oriental inspired dishes. Starters of melon, soup and nachos were around £3.50. I went for flame-grilled skewered king prawns at £3.99 with salad and spicy dip, which were juicy and nicely spiced. My companion resolutely ate his way through a satisfying £6.90 selection of chicken wings, mushrooms, onion rings and corn on the cob with chilli and barbecue sauces. For the main meal, he then managed a tasty flame-grilled beef burger stacked with tomato, lettuce and cheese for £8.45. I chose flavoursome grilled sea bass from the "Harvester Select" premium selection, which was £11.90 and came with new potatoes and crisp green beans, drizzled with garlic butter. Deserts included ice cream, brownies and profiteroles and I went for a rich chocolate mouse with fresh fruit at £4.90. My companion plumped for a £3.45 cinder toffee and caramel ice cream sundae, which, like the rest of our meal, was tasty, simple and enormous. For cheery atmosphere, value for money and a wide selection of hearty fare in an unusual and interesting setting, the Mansion House fits the bill.
