He won a scholarship to Lady Lumley's grammar school in Pickering, and on leaving school was apprenticed to learn horticulture on a nearby landed estate before moving to Roger's nurseries in Pickering. He was awarded a university place to study botany and horticulture but before he could take up this place, he was called up for six months' army training in March 1939.
